Microsoft and Open AI face lawsuits over alleged copyright infringement

Tech giants Microsoft and Open AI are the targets of a new lawsuit filed by the Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) over alleged copyright infringement.

At a time when traditional copyright rules are rapidly being replaced by artificial intelligence, this case presents significant issues regarding intellectual property rights.

The case was brought in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and is based on Open AI’s violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Copyright Act.

“OpenAI and Microsoft started siphoning off our stories to make their products stronger, but they never asked for permission or offered compensation, unlike other organizations that licensed our material,” said Monika Bauerlein, CEO of the Center for Investigative Reporting.

“This free-riding behavior is not only unfair, it is also a copyright infringement. The work of journalists, at CIR and elsewhere, is invaluable, and OpenAI and Microsoft know it.”

The organization called the lawsuit a “rebuke to artificial intelligence and its exploitative practices,” and stated that the lawsuit also focuses on how summary articles written by AI threaten publishers.

In the ongoing debate around digital content and intellectual property rights, a recent lawsuit is significant. It underscores the importance of protecting creative work and journalistic integrity from unlawful use in the age of artificial intelligence.
