The Military High Command has appealed to Nigerians to divert the energy and support shown during recent protests against bad governance towards the fight against insecurity and criminality.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defense Media Operations, made the call on Thursday, stressing that the military cannot address the problem alone.
Buba noted that the protests, which took various forms across the country, highlighted the need for collective action against insecurity.
He appealed to citizens to partner with security agencies by providing information and opposing suspicious activities.
The military spokesman acknowledged that various interest groups, including terrorists and political groups, were hijacking the protests, but stressed the need for citizens to support the armed forces in fighting terrorism, kidnapping and other crimes.

By channeling the same energy and passion shown during the protests to support the military, Buba believes that insecurity and criminality can be defeated quickly.
He said, “Before holding the demonstration, we saw that this demonstration would be interpreted in various ways considering the situation in this country and we had warned people not to hold this demonstration.
“We observed that the protests meant different things to different people. For some, the protests were peaceful as was recorded in the South. For some, the protests meant riots, for others, looting, and for others, demonstrations.
“And some interest groups hijack the situation including sovereignty disrupting groups, terrorist groups, political interest groups, and other interest groups.
“However, as we have always said, the fight against terrorism, kidnapping, etc. should not be left entirely to the security forces alone. If the people show the same spirit and determination as seen in various parts of the country during demonstrations against bad governance, to support the armed forces, then the problems of insecurity and crime can be resolved immediately.
“So we encourage that kind of support for the military’s fight against insecurity and criminality. We encourage citizens to partner with the security agencies by providing information, seeing things, and saying things, and the security agencies will take action.”
