Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a table tennis play robot that offers 88% accuracy and 42 mph shot speed (around 68 km/h).
Robots that show impressive performance are able to restore shots with various rounds with a success rate of 88%, which is comparable to human players.
Department of MIT Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) created robots, which track the ball and react in real time using sophisticated motion planning, computer vision, and machine learning.

The speed of the robot attack, which is intended to not only test human players but also help training with various types of shots and difficulties, faster than the previous table tennis robot and approaching the speed of returning elite human players.
According to the robot developer, this system is more than just a game because they intend to implement it in the robot training system in the future and increase the robot range.
But this technology also has broader implications. “The problem we resolve, specifically related to intercepting objects very quickly and precisely, has the potential to be useful in the scenario where robots must carry out dynamic maneuvers and plan where the effector will finally meet objects in real time,” said Postgraduate student MIT David Nguyen.
