Last night I received a distressing message from Mr David Adeleke (aka Davido). He was obviously devastated by the counter affidavit filed in court, earlier in the day, in response to his affidavit requesting joint custody of his daughter with my niece. Sofia Momodu.

I had seen David’s affidavit about two weeks ago and was very surprised as David and I had spoken via video call days earlier, with him and Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, and he never told me that he was having custody issues with my niece. So you can imagine my confusion when I found out through social media and subsequently my niece confirmed to me that he had filed a suit in court requesting joint custody of his daughter.
During the video call referred to, we were all very excited about his upcoming wedding ceremony, an event for which our family congratulated him. Before this, David had told me that he finally spoke to his daughter, after a long gap of about two years.
I was very happy and excited. I thought that everything was settled and that he and Sophia would now have the opportunity to take the best possible care of their daughter. I especially thanked David’s father, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, for his kindness and support to our daughter during the period of David’s absence.
I also took Sophia and her daughter to my dear friend, Governor Ademola Adeleke, to ask for his intervention. As far as I know, there was never a problem of shared custody. The problems were: non-payment of school fees for several sessions; non-payment of accommodation and wages for a nanny. There was no dedicated car for David’s daughter. And so on. Fortunately, I mentioned everything to Dr. Adedeji Adeleke and he responded positively, like a true grandfather. As for the problem of non-payment of school fees, David’s father arranged everything and also arranged for payments of future bills. He gave his granddaughter a car to take her to school. The remaining problem was accommodation.
David’s father verbally offered me, in their conversations, one of the family apartments at Oniru Estate, Victoria Island; however, perhaps due to a miscommunication, David’s lawyers had told him otherwise. After Sophia clarified this for her, she politely declined the offer and her reason was defensible in my view, because, as she is not married to David, she cannot feel comfortable living in a place full of David’s family members.
She and her daughter were living in Ikoyi before David and Sophia started their latest fights. Sophia’s request was that David pay half of the accommodation and she pay the other half. David said he could only contribute N5 million a year.
In my opinion, the lack of camaraderie between David and Sophia has caused this debacle. I have repeatedly warned that their daughter must not be allowed to suffer or be treated like a second-class child. David’s international status makes this imperative.
Sophia allowed David access to her daughter on the condition that he had his nanny nearby 24/7. The 9-year-old herself made this request and I believe it should be looked upon favorably and accepted. My grandniece had been given permission to go out with her cousins on several occasions.
The Governor’s daughter Nike was at Sophia’s home with the Governor’s grandson last Christmas Day, despite insufficient notice and she still allowed access.
Two months ago, the governor’s son Sina Rambo asked for a playdate for the children and Sophia rented a children’s place on Victoria Island for them to spend hours together. The only time she was unable to join her father’s family was when her grandfather asked her to go on holiday with her for three weeks last year, as the notice was too short and Sophia had already paid for her own trips, due to the lack of communication between the parents…
