NADCEL 2024: Nigerian Army celebrates 161 years with community projects and free healthcare in Plateau

On the occasion of Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers Day (NADCEL) 2024, the Nigerian Army (NA) inaugurated several quick impact projects and conducted a free medical awareness activity in Plateau State on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

These initiatives took place in the local government areas (LGAs) of Mangu, Riyom, Bassa and Wase, highlighting the NA’s commitment to community development and civil-military cooperation.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, inaugurated renovated classrooms, a solar-powered borehole and new toilets in Mangun, the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, said during his installation ceremony at Mangu Local Government.

This project was initiated by Major General Godwin Mutkut, a distinguished son of the community and the Commanding General of the 8th Division of the Nigerian Army.

General Lagbaja stressed that these projects are part of the Army Headquarters’ efforts to give back to the communities of senior officers who have served meritoriously.

He urged the Mangun community to take full ownership of the facilities and use them for the benefit of all. He also called for the community’s support in the military’s efforts to eliminate criminal elements in Plateau State.

The COAS explained that the NA’s objective is to promote civil-military cooperation to build trust and enhance its operations and training activities.

He said the NA will continue to implement non-kinetic strategies, including rapid high-impact projects, to complement its kinetic efforts across the country and win the hearts and minds of Nigerians.
General Lagbaja thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff for their support and guidance.

He further expressed gratitude to the Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Muftwang, for his assistance in the army’s peacekeeping efforts in the state.

Major General Godwin Mutkut, representing the Mangun community, expressed gratitude to the NA for the projects, highlighting their positive impact on the well-being of the community.

He stressed that the projects will provide a better learning environment and help fight insecurity by engaging young minds academically.

In Riyom LGA, COAS commissioned additional classrooms and a solar-powered borehole at Hoss Community Secondary School in Ta-Hoss.

He stressed that the choice of Ta-Hoss was due to its significant impact on farmer-herder conflicts and the NA’s effort to help the community recover.

The new facilities aim to provide a conducive learning environment and promote a healthy lifestyle, especially in view of reports of cholera in some parts of the country.

The Nigerian Army also conducted a free medical outreach drive at the University of Jos Main Campus Primary School in Angwan Rogo, Jos North, providing free medical services to residents.

The event included medical check-ups, treatment for various ailments, and distribution of medicines, glasses, mosquito nets, crutches, and wheelchairs to people with physical disabilities.

Counseling sessions and health meetings were also organized to raise awareness in the community about drug and substance abuse.
