The National Association of Nigerian Professional Footders (Nanpf) invited the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to guarantee the equity and the right process in managing the betting accusations against goalkeeper Adeyinka.
In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL and signed by the union executive secretary, his partner Austin Popo, on behalf of the President of the Council of Players and the former International Sunday ABE, the Nanpf expressed concern for what he described as the “premature suspension” of Adeyinka before the conclusion of the investigations.
According to the union, the NPFL decision to suspend the player and advertise it in the media without risk of proven evidence prejudice to the case and damaging his goalkeeper’s career and reputation.
While reiterating its alignment with the zero tolerance position of FIFA and NFF on bets in football, the Nanpf urged the organ of the League to consider a more measured approach. He proposed that Adeyinka was forbidden by the participation of the match pending the result of the investigation, rather than having his move-a move that says that it could have negative long-term consequences.
“It is a fundamental principle of justice that an individual should be adequately informed of any accusations against them and given the opportunity to respond,” reads the letter, adding that the player has not been formally notified with the notice of crime.
The Nanpf drew from biblical teachings in fair hearing, observing that even Adam in the garden of Eden had the opportunity to defend himself.
The Union reiterated its commitment to work with the NPFL to protect the integrity of the sport by safeguarding the player’s rights.
