On Thursday, the National Assembly adopted on June 12 as an official day for the President of Nigeria to face a joint session of the legislator every year.
The President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio announced the resolution during a joint session of the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives of Abuja, following a motion moved by the speaker of the Chamber, Tajudeen Abbas.
“Mr. President, in the eloquent discourse of the honorable President Tajudeen Abbas, raised a motion that should be formalized as the presidential day of the discourse on the joint session of the National Assembly on 12 June. With this question I put the question,” said Akpabio.
“Those in support of the motion have moved and detached, say” Aye “; those against the said” Nay “. The” Ayes “have,” he said.
The decision came shortly after President Bola Tinubu turned to a joint session of the National Assembly to celebrate 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria. The event was held at the Chamber of the House of Representatives.
In his speech, President Tinubu made homage to the deceased Mko Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the presidential elections of 12 June 1993 and his wife Kudirat, which describes ABI as a symbol of the democratic journey of Nigeria.
He also honored the sacrifices of other pro-democracy heroes, including Alfred Rewane, Anthony Enahoro and Pa Abraham Adesanya.
Confuting by claiming that his administration had influenced the Independent National Electoral Commission (INC) to deny registration to the new political parties, Tinubu reiterated his commitment for multi -party democracy.
He stressed that his government was focused on promoting economic growth, industrial development and infrastructure in the field of efforts to provide dividends of democracy.
President Tinubu also praised the National Assembly for his continuous cooperation with the executive arm, adding that this synergy had contributed to supporting the democratic government.
He rejected the suggestions that his administration had planned to transform Nigeria into a party state.
