Navy chief Abbas tasks commanders with using intelligence and technology to improve operations

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, tasked commanders of Nigerian Navy commands, units and establishments to intensify naval operations to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria and combat all forms of criminality in its maritime environment. During a strategic meeting at Naval Headquarters on March 10, 2026, with the commanding flag officers, Tri-Service operations commanders, operating bases and logistics groups, the Chief of Naval Staff reaffirmed the importance of upholding the Nigerian Navy’s core values of professionalism, integrity and teamwork.

The strategic commitment of the Chief of Staff of the Navy with Commanders, 4 months after assuming command of the Navy, aimed to reorganize all operations of the Nigerian Navy across all spectrums, as outlined in the Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy.

This followed an extensive operational tour undertaken to interact directly with personnel from all NN units and consult key stakeholders to improve Nigerian Navy operations. This is in line with his vision to develop a modern, agile and professional naval force dedicated to securing Nigeria’s maritime interests and advancing national security objectives, in synergy with other security agencies.

Vice Admiral Idi Abbas also commended the operational successes of the Nigerian Navy’s flagship operation, Operation DELTA SENTINEL, alongside other similar operations conducted by the Nigerian Navy.

The CNS lauded the increase in intelligence- and technology-driven naval operations, which have led to major seizures of stolen crude oil, destruction of illegal refining sites, arrests of illegal bunkerers and improved search and rescue operations by the Nigerian Navy. He said these efforts have ensured no piracy in Nigerian waters, increased oil production and saved the nation billions of Naira that could have been lost to criminal elements.

He pledged the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Navy through strategic investments that strengthen naval operations and improve the welfare of personnel.

The CNS also applauded the significant contributions of the Nigerian Navy in the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in all joint theaters in the country.

He charged commanders to sustain efforts and continue to collaborate with sister services and other security agencies.

The CNS said the Presidency’s expectations of the NN are high and that the commanders will work assiduously to complete all assigned tasks. He also stressed the need to sustain the operational tempo and ensure that earnings are not eroded.

During the meeting, the CNS reiterated its leadership philosophy, emphasizing discipline, integrity, merit, responsibility and staff welfare as key principles. Based on its leadership ethic, the CNS stated that merit must be rewarded to serve as a motivation for others.

He also urged commanders to take personal responsibility for the men and material entrusted to their care, using allocated resources to improve the system.
