Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a packaged consignment of 8.2 kilograms of methamphetamine at a car park in Mazamaza, Ojo area of Lagos State.
The illicit addictive substance, also called ice or crystal meth, was packaged in chocolate wrappers imported by Dunkin’ Turtle Love and then hidden in the casing of three speakers.
NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday, June 23, 2024.
Babafemi noted that a 39-year-old suspect, Michael Odiomume, who was sending the consignment to Owerri, the Imo state capital, was arrested in the park on Wednesday, June 19.
The NDLEA spokesperson added that anti-narcotics officers, on Tuesday, June 18, intercepted a white Nissan Frontier pick-up truck with amber lights and a fake registration number of a security agency in Kiyi village, Kuje area of Abuja.
He disclosed that the vehicle was loaded with 454 compressed blocks of Cannabis Sativa, weighing 340.8kg, purchased in Uzeba, Edo State.
Babafemi said a 76-year-old man, Francis Omofa, linked to the shipment, had been arrested.
Babafemi said Omofa claimed to have been in the illicit drug business for 10 years.
The NDLEA spokesperson noted that commands and formations of the anti-drug agency across the country continued their awareness activities on the War on Drug Abuse (WADA) in schools, centers of worship, workplaces and in communities, among others, in the past week.
According to him, these include WADA enlightenment classes for students and teachers of St. Peters College, Nibo, Anambra; students and staff of Apostolic Grammar School, Ilesa, Osun State; students and teachers of Immanuel Baptist High School, Oyo City, Oyo State; students and staff of the Federal Government Science and Technical College, Otukpa, Benue State, as well as WADA advocacy conference for Muslim worshipers during Juma’at prayer in Umuahia, Abia State; and a WADA support visit to the First Lady of Enugu State, Nkechinyere Mbah, by the NDLEA state command.
Commending the anti-narcotics officers, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), noted the balance between drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts, as well as those of their compatriots across the country.
Marwa tasked NDLEA officers to maintain ongoing offensive action against drug cartels as they continue to intensify their WADA social defense campaign.
