NDLEA seizes N6.2 billion worth of drugs at Rivers Port

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have recovered 892,400 bottles of codeine syrup worth N6,246,800,000 from Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Onne area of ​​Rivers State.

NDLEA Director of Media and Promotion, Femi Babafemi, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

The NDLEA spokesperson said the illicit drugs were recovered from five containers during a joint inspection with Nigerian Customs Service officials and other stakeholders at the port on Wednesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 15.

Babafemi noted that the opioid bottles were packed in 5,337 cartons with a gross weight of 133,860 kilograms and shipped in five containers from India.

Babafemi further disclosed that NDLEA officers patrolling along the Kwali-Gwagwalada expressway in Abuja, on Tuesday, August 13, intercepted a truck from which 30,000 vials of Pentazocine injection were recovered and three suspects, Ifeanyi Sunday, Jeremiah Paul and Edet Ubokobong, were arrested.

He added that NDLEA commands across the country continued their War on Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization conferences and sensitization visits to places of worship, schools, workplaces, palaces of traditional rulers and communities throughout the week.

The anti-drug agency spokesperson listed the activities as including a WADA awareness lecture to students of the College of Nursing Science, Awgu, Enugu State; traditional rulers of Umuahia North, Abia State; a WADA awareness visit to the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunleye 111, Ondo State; and a WADA awareness visit to the Dein of Agbor, Dr Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagborekuzi 1, Delta State; among others.

Commending the agency’s officials for the seizure, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) also applauded them for intensifying WADA’s awareness-raising lectures and advocacy messages across their areas of responsibility.
