NDLEA to work with traditional rulers in the fight against illicit drug trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will work with all stakeholders, including traditional rulers and community guardians, to ensure that the scourge of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking is eradicated from communities across the country.

NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, made this known on Friday in Abuja when he received the Dein of Agbor, Benjamin Gbenoba.

“We are currently deploying our personnel to local government areas to establish our presence at the grassroots level, to promote our anti-drug abuse advocacy and enforce the law against those dealing illicit drugs at that level.

“To achieve this goal, we have met with ALGON leadership to make this process seamless and we welcome the support and partnership of all stakeholders for the successful implementation of all our drug supply and demand reduction efforts through a whole-of-society approach,” said Marwa.

Previously, the traditional ruler had sought to collaborate with the NDLEA to put an end to the activities of drug dealers in his kingdom.

“We have had some problems with drug dealers in Agbor. We have tried to deal with them once or twice, but we would like to at least be able to provide some land for the NDLEA to come to Agbor.

“My main hope is Gen Marwa here. Everything he touches turns to gold. Since he came aboard the NDLEA, you have been invigorated.

“I’ve noticed that since he came on board, the dealers have become more hesitant and we need more of them.

“Therefore, we continue to learn from his experience and continue to ensure that this Agency is strengthened as much as possible.

This, he said, was due to the devastating effects of illicit substances that were destroying the lives of young people and adults around the world.

He added that his partnership with the NDLEA was also intended to send a strong message to drug dealers: their time in his reign is up.

“You deserve to be incarcerated because that intelligence can also lead you to sell houses or assets. Do something that does not negatively affect people.

“Because every drug dealer doesn’t want his kids taking these hard drugs. But he doesn’t care if his neighbor takes these drugs. He’s destroying us as a nation.

“The kidnappers are now using these illicit drugs to carry out their nefarious activities. The reduction of these drugs in our society will reduce the crime rate, robberies and so on.

“So, my message to the drug dealers is: be careful, you have been warned; we don’t want you in Agbor; we don’t want you in our country.”

Gbenoba said “for those who take drugs, once you take them, it’s a life and death decision you’re making. You can take them for the first time and you can die.

“You destroy your family and you destroy the people around you. So, as much as possible, choose life over death with these drugs,” he warned.
