A recently emergency terrorist group known as Mahmuda has launched a new attack on Duruma Village (Karonji) in the area of the local government of Baruten in the state of Kwara, unleashing tension and fear among the residents.
The attack, which took place on Friday evening, saw the militants arrive in motorbike and start shooting indiscriminately, confirmed sources.
During the attack, according to reports, the terrorists set fire to a vehicle and several motorcycles belonging to the local supervision group.
However, the vigilantes were able to reject the attack, killing two attackers in the process.
“This is what Mahmuda’s boys did yesterday. They burned the vehicles of our vigilants, but they were rejected. Two of them were killed,” said a resident.
The Mahmuda group, considered a chipped faction of Boko Haram, in recent months has intensified violent operations between the rural communities of Kwara and parts of the state of the Niger, in particular around the unreserved expanse of the Kainji Lake National Park.
According to reports, the group operates in the communities such as Kemaanji, Tenabo, Baabete and Yashikira in Kaiama and Barutten Lgas of Kwara, as well as districts of Babana and Wawa in Borgu Lga of the state of the Niger.
Last Wednesday, the same group would have killed over 15 people in an attack on a supervisory unit in Kemanji.
The locals say that the militants have established control over parts of the National Park, imposing taxes on shepherds and farmers, applying Islamic rules and resolving disputes instead of state authorities.
The residents raised concerns about the silence of the federal government and on the inability of the security agencies to remove the group despite its growing threat.
The efforts to achieve security officials for comments were not successful at the time of submitting this relationship.
