Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has broken away from the post-match statement that criticized individual Eagles players after a 1-1 draw with South Africa in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualification.
The statement, issued by the Director of Federation Communication, Ademola Oorajire, has described the striker Cyriel Dessers as “slow” and blamed Captain William Troost-Ekong for his own purpose in handing over Bafana Bafana Leadership.
However, NFF Secretary General, Mohammed Sanusi, on Wednesday clarified that the statement did not reflect the official position of the federation.
“I see a release like someone else’s. There is no one in the federation who is happy with it,” said Sanusi. “NFF did not endorse the statement. We really respect all players. Blaming an individual for unfair team results.”
Sanusi stressed that the federation views South African equipment as a collective effort and oppose efforts to disrupt any player.
“When we win, it is the team’s victory. When we lose, it’s also collective. There is no player to choose,” he added.
He further defended the Troost-Ekong, describing the criticism directed at him as unjustified, noting that the previous defender was named the most valuable player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at Côte D’AVoire.
“That is a goal that is not beneficial. His intention is to clean the ball. Anyone knows football understands that things like that happen,” said Sanusi.
The Secretary General also expressed confidence in the team’s unity, revealed that the preparation was ongoing for the remaining World Cup qualifiers and Afcon who would come in Morocco.
“Our house is settled. We are preparing for the remaining qualifications and Afcon. There is no problem with our players or the coach crew. The government and NFF are proud of the players’ efforts,” he said.
Sanusi further revealed that disciplinary steps will be taken internally regarding unauthorized liberation.
“I can convince you that NFF will take action about this problem,” he said.
Nigeria is currently in third place in Group C CAF World Cup qualifiers with 11 points from eight matches, six points adrift of South African leaders. Super Eagles must now secure victory against Lesotho and the Republic of Benin while relying on other results to maintain their hopes to meet the requirements for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
