The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has written to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seeking their assistance in securing the release of over 1,000 protesters detained during the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The protesters have been detained for more than two weeks without access to their lawyers, although police failed to charge them on Monday and Tuesday.
In his letter to the NBA President, the Executive Director of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, expressed deep concern over the alleged detention of peaceful protesters.
βThe NHRC writes to express deep concern over the alleged detention of over 1,000 Nigerians following protests against the deteriorating living conditions during the #Endbadgovernance protestsβ¦ We are concerned that peaceful protesters are being detained and their rights violated,β Ojukwu said in the letter.

The NHRC urges the NBA to take immediate action to ensure that those detained are afforded their legal rights, including access to legal representation, a speedy and fair trial, or immediate release if there is no legitimate legal basis for continuing their detention.
“We expect your immediate intervention to ensure that those detained are afforded their legal rights… We are confident that with the NBA’s intervention, the rights of those affected will be protected, and action will be taken to prevent further violations,” he said.
The NHRC also called on the NBA to mobilize legal support to secure the release of those unlawfully detained, cooperate with relevant authorities to ensure due process of law, and engage in advocacy and public awareness raising to prevent future unlawful arrests and detentions during peaceful protests.
The NBA has yet to react to the developments.
