Nigeria added 2,000MW, reaching the highest power plant capacity in 40 years

Nigeria has increased its power plant capacity by 2,000 Megawatt (MW) in just two years, an achievement that previously took almost four decades to be achieved.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this during a polite visit to his office in Abuja by the Nigerian Engineers (NSE) community led by his president, Margret Oguntala.

He noted that from 1984 to 2022, the capacity of the Nigerian generation increased from 2,000MW to 4,000MW.

However, under the government of the President of the Tinubu Bola, the country has now reached 6,003MW, showing a new commitment to the revitalization of the electricity sector.

The Minister, who acknowledged the challenges continuously in the electricity sector, described the increase as an important milestone and urged Nigerian engineers to take a more proactive role in resolving the country’s energy crisis.

He challenged NSE to reflect on why a country with a group of extensive technical expertise is still struggling with the collapse of networks and infrastructure failures.

Adelabu said: “NSE was founded in 1958-67 years ago – However, we still experience network collapse. We have a lot of engineers in Nigeria, so why is our power infrastructure still in this situation? The answer is something must change.”

He called for a stronger collaboration between NSE and the Federal Ministry of Manpower, emphasizing the need for supporting technical advisors and guidance programs to improve the efficiency of this sector.

He also encouraged training young engineers to ensure long -term sustainability in power and distribution.

“The relevant mate and NSE are naturally related, but is this relationship translated into a concrete benefit for our power infrastructure? We must change it,” the Minister said.
