The announcement was accompanied by words of gratitude and vision of Azeez Amida, president of Showtime Flag Football League, who congratulated the players:
“His dedication, talent and hard work have won this honor, and we are proud to see that you carry our flag on the continental stage,” said Amida.
The event, which is destined to be a unifying force for flag football in Africa, is being organized under the auspices of NAFA (Football Association of the Flag of Nigeria) with strong support from the National Sports Commission, chaired by Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the general director Bukola Olopade. Their combined efforts have sat the foundations for this historical participation.
Amida also used the time to reaffirm his call to a National Federation for Flag football in Nigeria, one that will provide a sustainable structure, clear paths of players and institutional support for the basic development for elite development.
“What we have achieved as private entities is already a great feat,” he added. “But we can do much more with a strong structure of the federation behind it.”
This international opportunity follows the successful Showtime Bowl XII, which attracted worldwide attention and raised flag soccer status in Nigeria, preparing the scenario for continental recognition.
With the eyes of Africa now in the Egyptian tournament, and the Nigerian players who prepare to compete in a larger stage, the call to a united and backed flag soccer system at the national level has never been stronger, or more urgent.
As flag football continues to increase, Nigeria not only participates. It is leading the load.
