Nigeria condemns APC of the Canadian court, PDP terrorist label

The Federal Government has strongly rejected a sentence by a Federal Canadian court that designates some Nigerian political parties as terrorist organizations.

He described the decision as unfounded, reckless and an unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of the country.

In a declaration issued on Friday, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi IMomotimi Ebienfa, said that the sentence was born from a case that involves a Nigerian, Mr. Douglas Egharevba, who arrived in Canada in 2017 and applied for refugee status pursuant to the country’s immigration laws.

According to Ebienfa, the Court’s decision was equivalent to a vast generalization against the whole belonging to a political party that had produced three democratically elected presidents, instead of facing the conduct of the individuals found guilty.

“The implication is that every member of the political parties mentioned is a potential terrorist, and this is completely false and unacceptable”, reads the declaration.

The government stressed that Nigeria was a sovereign nation with a solid constitutional and legal framework that guided political activities and that its political parties made legally within a lively democratic system.

He urged the Canadian authorities to withdraw the “incorrect designation” and to involve the Nigerian institutions pertinent through diplomatic channels to face the matter.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the global struggle against terrorism, the government has invited the international community to ignore the court sentence and maintain confidence in the democratic governance of Nigeria.

He also warned Nigerian citizens not to make unfounded accusations on the country in search of asylum or favors abroad.
