Nigeria ensures the rise of the Davis Cup to the World Group II

By Tayo Adeyemo

The Nigerian Davis Cup team has won the promotion to the World Group II after finishing third in the qualifiers of Group III of Africa in Zimbabwe.

Christopher Bulus’s squad, Daniel Adelev, Michael Emmanuel and Canice Abua overcame the disease and limited preparation to ensure victories over Senegal, Algeria and Zimbabwe, losing only Namibia. Senegal headed the group, followed by Namibia, with the three teams advancing. Algeria and Zimbabwe lost.

The captain and coach who does not play Benson Isichelli praised the resistance of his players despite the difficult conditions.

“Our news was a miracle. We did not have a camp due to the lack of funds, so we used the CBN Open as our only preparation. When we arrived in Zimbabwe, most of us became ill with the flu and we could not train properly, only the Bulus, which joined us from the United States, was completely fit. However, the children escaped through Nosis and medical treatment to gain promotion,” he said.

The playoffs raffle of the World Group II Group will be held in December, with matches scheduled for February 2026.

Coach Isicelli urged greater support before the next stage.

“We face teams from Europe and Asia that are ahead of us in the facilities and preparation. We need to camp early, better training and financial support if we want to compete at this level.”
