The federal government has begun an investigation of the cause of strange meat -eating diseases that have killed seven people in the state of Adamawa.
Acting National Coordinator, National Tuberculosis, Buruli Maag and Leprosy Control Program, Dr. Adesigbin Oluufmi, revealed this to journalists on Saturday in Abuja.
At least 67 cases have been recorded, with eight patients receive surgical treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Education Hospital in Yola on September 10.
Olufemi said: “This disease is suspected to be an ignored ulcer, a tropical disease that is ignored caused by Mycobacterium Ulcerans, which is commonly found in a swampy environment.
“The disease usually starts like boiling, exploding, and gradually eats flesh, damaging bones.
“The exact cause and the transmission method are still unknown, but the theory shows that insects like mosquitoes may play a role.”
He said the Adamawa state government had been proactive in responding to the plague, while the Federal and Partner governments had mobilized the affected people since September 14.

Olufemi said the creation of continuous awareness was very important to stop the spread, because some residents initially associated the condition of magic.
“Health security requires a multi-sectoral approach, including the supply of better drinking water and sanitation.
“The government and partners will maintain efforts to care for existing patients and curb further spread, with treatment involving antibiotics and surgery,” said the Coordinator.
The world health organization recognizes ulcers as one of the most global tropical diseases.
