… NEMA leads the simulation exercise
In a related development, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted a flood simulation exercise on the vast scale in Dukku, a river community on the outskirts of Bernin Kebbi, State of Kebbi.
This, according to a Sunday’s declaration of the head unit of the chief NEMA, Manzo Ezekiel, was part of the agency’s plan to strengthen the preparation for the basic disaster.
The declaration states that Dukku has been identified as one of the high -risk communities vulnerable to serious floods in the 2025 season, with a river that crosses the settlement that increases its exposure to flood risks.
“The exercise of simulation, organized in collaboration with the government of the State of Kebbi, has been designed to test the response plans to the floods, improve the coordination of the interested parties and increase the public awareness of the potential catastrophes. It is part of the largest NEMA preparation strategy aims at areas subject to floods throughout Nigeria, in particular in the north-western areas and north of the North.
“To lead the exercise was the general manager of Nema, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, who underlined the importance of promptness and collaboration in saving human lives during catastrophes. He observed that the simulation was aimed at improving coordination, communication and operational efficiency among all interested parties of the response to catastrophes”, said the note.
“As we all know, the floods remains one of the most recurring and devastating natural catastrophes in Nigeria, with vast impacts on lives, means of subsistence, infrastructure and community. We are simulating a crisis today so that we are better prepared to save life when it becomes a reality. Let me remodel that preparation saves life”, we said the head of the agency.
He added that the exercise also aimed to identify the gaps in the existing response mechanisms and strengthen multi-agency collaboration throughout the region.
“The participants in the exercise were the first fundamental rescuers, including the response unit to military catastrophes (Dru), the Nigerian police, the federal firefighters, the security of Nigeria and the body of civil steing (NSCDC), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FSR) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
“The simulation also had to highlight the risks of flood that could derive from intense rains and the potential overflow of dams in the region, which could have a significant impact on the communities.
“As part of the support of the Agency to the Municipality, the general director of Mrs. Zubaida Umar also presented rescue jackets to Dukku residents to help their personal safety in the event of floods,” added Ezekiel.
