Nigerian-born council leader in UK resigns after allegations of drink driving and drug use

A Nigerian-born chief executive of a British council, Bayo Dosunmu, was forced to resign after he was arrested and charged with drink driving and drug possession offences.

Dosunmu, who is chief executive of Lambeth Council, was accused on Friday of fleeing the scene of a car crash in Westminster in late June.

A council spokesman said the 46-year-old from Hammersmith was arrested on “suspection of failing to stop, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of class A drugs and driving without insurance.”

The spokesperson confirmed that Dosunmu will officially leave his ยฃ185,000-a-year post next week.

โ€œBayo Dosunmu has resigned as chief executive of Lambeth Council with effect from Monday 15 July 2024,โ€ the spokesperson said.

โ€œFiona Connolly currently serves as acting chief executive, and the board will immediately commence the process of recruiting a permanent chief executive.โ€
