Nigerian Foreign Affairs Tongar underlines the need for Ecowas, American partnership

Abuja (basic reporter) Nigerian minister of Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, underlined the need to deepen the partnership between the countries of Ecowas and the United States based on the principles of the need to strengthen their significant growth.

Amb. Tugar said that in his opening speech during the 54th ordinary session of the Mediation and Security Council at the Ministerial level of Ecowas, held on Wednesday 18 June 2025 in Abuja.

He praised the ministers for their shared commitment to advance peace and security throughout West Africa, in pursuit of the development of the community and the lasting well -being of its citizens.

According to him, there is a need that the ministers collectively consulted, collaborate and take decisive actions that is vital to promote peace, security and good government throughout the region.

Tugar said: “There is often a direct correlation between security and prosperity. Supported prosperity is obtained through trade and investments, without barriers.

“Therefore, it would be submissive on my part if I had not mentioned the apparent recent decision of the United States government to include all the EcoWas countries in its restrictions on visas.

“Togo was in a previous list. It would be very unfortunate if it were, because we are a region of opportunity ready to do business.

“We can critical minerals and rare lands, such as the Samarium from the Monazite found in Bauchi. We would like to do business with the United States, but the restrictions on visas are barriers not for business.

“Ecowas countries and the United States have a rare opportunity to create a partnership, based on the principles of need.”

He described the soberness as a strategic alternative to the most distant and politically divergent energy producers, saying: “We will ask agreements for our prosperity; the only question is with whom?

“In addition, those who affect the opportunities in our region allowing the officials and technocrats of the government, company managers and entrepreneurs to travel freely and forth to close business?”?

He said that the session had become significant to promote a resolution on the number of key issues that directly addressed issues on the stability, cohesion and resilience of our region.

He revealed that the Council would be presented with numerous important memorandums and relationships, which cover political, security and humanitarian issues during the meeting.

“The Ecowas Commission and its team will provide a complete analysis of the trends and developments in our political panorama, including the transition process in Guinea.

“The Council will also examine essential elements in our efforts to guarantee the operational readiness and sustainability of our Peace Support Architecture to consolidate and improve the impact on the field.

“This advice will receive a complete update on the centers of warning and early response in our Member States. These centers are essential components of our regional conflict prevention framework,” he said.

Tuggar explained that a regional partnership for democracy (RPD) had been introduced by the Council, in collaboration with the United Nations development program, to face the challenges of the democratic government.

He said that the RPD was established between May 15 and May 24, as a model that should be owned and applied collectively within the policies, on the basis of the particularities of the respective policies of the Member States.

The event was attended by the president of Ecowas, ministers and members of the Mediation and Security Council, vice -president of the Ecowas Commission. Others include members of the Permanent Committee of the representatives, commissioners and heads of institution and resident representatives.
