The Federal Government has appealed to promoters of the #EndBadGovernance protests to postpone plans for a nationwide rally scheduled for August 1.
The government also appealed to protesters to engage in dialogue and support efforts to address the country’s challenges.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, made the call at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja.
He stressed that the government is working tirelessly to address the nation’s challenges.
The SGF points out that the government inherited an economy in need of urgent reform and that policy measures, such as the removal of fuel subsidies, have resulted in unexpected adjustments.
While acknowledging the right of citizens to peacefully protest, Akume expressed concern about the potential for protests to be hijacked by criminals.
He urged Nigerians to prioritize peace, dialogue and collaboration, and ensure that the government remains open to dialogue.

He said: “Economic prosperity for the nation remains the primary objective of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as it is the engine of progress, lifting families out of poverty and building a strong and resilient society.
“To achieve this goal, we must enjoy peace and stability because they are the foundations on which trust, cooperation and shared purpose are built. When peace reigns, policies bear fruit, businesses flourish, investments flourish and creativity is unleashed.
“This government, which took office in May 2023, inherits an economy in need of urgent, bold and imaginative reforms. Policy steps including the removal of the unsustainable fuel subsidy regime must be taken. It must be acknowledged that this has resulted in unexpected adjustments that affect all aspects of the economy and our daily lives.
“For the avoidance of doubt, President Tinubu’s administration recognizes the right to peaceful protest, but vigilance and caution must be our watchwords. The government is concerned about the dangers associated with the protests being vulnerable to being hijacked by bandits, insurgents and other criminals. Instead, we urge that dialogue be advanced and we remain open to it.
“We urge Nigerians to embrace peace, dialogue and collaboration in addressing the challenges we face together. Please conduct legitimate business and avoid any action and/or gathering that could disrupt the peace of the country. Also remain vigilant.”
