NLC accuses Nigerian government of plotting to trap #EndBadGovernance protesters

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the Federal Government of plotting to frame innocent citizens on trumped-up charges following the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in the country.

In a communique issued after a meeting of the Emergency National Executive Council on Saturday and signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC condemned the government’s action and called for an inclusive stakeholders’ conference to address the root causes of the unrest.

Congress demanded an immediate end to attacks on protesters, a National Day of Mourning for those who lost their lives, and accountability from security agencies responsible for the deaths.

The NLC also called for the release of detainees and trade union members arrested during the protests.

Congress criticized the government’s efforts to criminalize protests and crackdown on individuals with leftist ideologies.

The NLC urges the government to show good faith and begin the healing process by releasing detainees and engaging in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders.

The communique read: โ€œThe NEC once again condemns the killing of innocent protesters who were peacefully expressing their grievances against the government’s harsh policies.

“We demand an immediate end to these attacks and call on the government to declare a National Day of Mourning for those who lost their lives and property during the protests. In addition, all security agencies responsible for these tragic deaths must be held accountable, especially the Police.

“The NEC calls for the immediate release of detainees and trade unionists arrested both in their homes and in places of recreation. This is the only way the Government can demonstrate good faith and begin the healing of the nation. The NEC condemns the plot to frame innocent citizens on trumped-up charges.

โ€œWe must understand that this is not the first protest in Nigeria and it will not be the last. The NEC wonders why this administration has criminalized protest and has renewed its crackdown on Marxists, Socialists and those of various shades of Left Ideology as if courting neoliberal dictatorship.โ€
