NLC threatens nationwide strike as police summon Ajaero

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian Police, threatening to launch a nationwide strike if its president, Joe Ajaero, is arrested or injured.

The resolution was announced by Vice President Comrade Adewale Adeyanju after an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council on Tuesday.

A group of union members gathered at the NLC headquarters in Abuja, singing solidarity songs as the meeting went on. The union members vowed to go on strike from Tuesday midnight “if anything happens to the congress president”.

The communique read in part, “The NEC warns the nation to desist from its evil intentions and immediately stop the witch hunt against Congress leaders. Congress will not remain silent while the rights and liberties of its members and leaders are trampled upon with impunity by the State.

“The NEC directs all affiliates and state councils to immediately begin the process of mobilizing their members across the country. The Congress will not hesitate to take all necessary measures, including mass protests and industrial action, to protect the integrity and independence of the labor movement. Should anything happen to the Congress President or any other Congress leader who supports the tendentious allegations of the State; the NEC directs all its affiliates and state councils to resume the nationwide indefinite strike action by 12:00 midnight tonight.”

The threat came after the Nigerian Police summoned Ajaero for investigation on charges of financing terrorism, treason and cybercrime. A letter dated August 19, 2024, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu, ordered Ajaero to appear for questioning by 10:00 am today, warning that a warrant of arrest would be issued if he failed to comply.
