NMDPRA cracks down on illegal fuel sales amid shortage

The Nigerian Petroleum Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA) on Thursday issued a stern warning to petrol stations against supplying premium motor fuel (PMS), or petrol, to illegal traders. The regulator has vowed to take action against those who violate the directive.

In a post on X, the NMDPRA announced that it will suspend the licenses of gas stations found selling fuel to black market dealers. The decision came after a recent stakeholder meeting to discuss the issue of black market fuel sales.

“NMDPRA has initiated a crackdown on the illegal sale of petroleum products, particularly PMS, in jerry cans. Fuel stations are urged to stop servicing illegal traders; failure to do so will result in suspension of retail licenses,” the regulator said.

The regulator expressed concern about the rampant illegal dumping of fuel in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly near fuel stations. The regulator highlighted the dangers posed by this activity, including potential fuel shortages and safety hazards.

To address the issue, the NMDPRA has launched a crackdown on illegal fuel sales. The agency said it has conducted surveillance operations in the FCT, leading to the arrest of several individuals involved in the activity.

The NMDPRA is aimed at ensuring orderly distribution of fuel and preventing exploitation of consumers by unscrupulous individuals. By holding fuel stations accountable for their role in the supply chain, the regulator hopes to curb illegal gasoline sales and maintain price stability in the market.
