Nokia beats Amazon in patent lawsuit

Nokia has won a legal battle with Amazon over patents after a German court found that Amazon used its proprietary video technology without permission.

The Munich Regional Court in a ruling delivered on Monday ordered Amazon to stop selling its Fire Stick streaming device in Germany, citing infringement of Nokia’s video technology patents.

Nokia Chief Licensing Officer Arvin Patel announced that Amazon was using the company’s intellectual property video technology in end-user streaming devices and selling it illegally without a license.

The lawsuit, which focuses on the unauthorized use of Nokia technology in a range of goods and services, including Amazon Prime Video, entered the ruling as part of a broader legal action.

Amazon did not provide specific details when it said it disagreed with the court’s decision and hoped the matter would be resolved quickly.

“This decision will not impact existing customers and a wide selection of Fire TV devices will continue to be available on Amazon,” Amazon said in an emailed statement after the ruling.
