The banned Igbo separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has warned the Nigerian government of the deteriorating health condition of its jailed leader, Nnamdi Kanu, saying there would be severe consequences if anything happened to him.
The group which sounded the alarm in a statement on Monday, lamented that despite Kanu’s failing health, the Directorate of State Services (DSS), has refused to release him for proper medical treatment despite several courts granting him bail.
A statement issued by IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, alleged that it had uncovered a plot by the President Bola Tinubu-led government, in connivance with some Igbo politicians to get rid of Kanu while in detention.
The statement posted on one of the X platforms, titled ‘Nigerian government must release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as his health deteriorates to avoid dire consequences,’ reads:
“It has become very clear that the Nigerian government, the Nigerian judiciary, DSS operatives and some Igbo (Southeast) politicians are all united in a plot to eliminate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“These people should know the consequences of all the harm that befell Nnamdi Kanu while in custody. We have repeatedly demanded the release of Nnamdi Kanu as ordered by the Nigerian Court of Appeal, which acquitted him of all charges. Likewise, the Supreme Court has ruled that Nnamdi Kanu did not abscond.

“The same Supreme Court declared the kidnapping and extraordinary transfer from Kenya to Nigeria illegal. If the federal government and the DSS have not succeeded in destroying IPOB since 2021 when they kidnapped and extraordinary transferred Mazi Kanu, what makes them think they can destroy IPOB now?
“The Directorate of State for Indigenous Peoples of Biafra reiterates its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to enable him to take proper care of his health as it is very clear that the deterioration of his health condition is a direct result of the negligence of the Nigerian government and its secret police, the DSS, to provide him with proper and adequate health services.
“The Nigerian Judiciary must not follow in the footsteps of the lawless executive branch of government called Nigeria and its DSS by colluding to violate the rights and liberty of our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“The Directorate of State calls on the International Community, the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, the African Union, Amnesty International, Intersociety, Human Rights Watch and all freedom lovers to compel the Nigerian Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from illegal detention so that his health condition does not worsen.
“Why keep an innocent person in solitary confinement to suffer for no reason, even after the courts have declared his detention illegal and a violation of fundamental human rights?
“Nnamdi Kanu’s only crime was to champion the Biafran struggle for self-determination, which adheres to the UN convention and the African Charter on the Rights of Peoples.
“IPOB assures the Nigerian government and all other stakeholders that the struggle for the freedom of the Biafran people and our country is unstoppable.”
