The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) suspended the operations on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor after the derailment of Tuesday’s train.
The CEO of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, announced the suspension during the briefing of Abuja journalists, confirming that the technical staff, the officials of the office of investigations on the safety of Nigeria (NSIB) and other pertinent agencies were already at the site leading investigations.
He rejected the statements that trains were poorly maintained and revealed that the refunds had been started for all affected passengers.
Opeifa also met some passengers in the ASHAM and IDU railway stations in Abuja, ensuring the support of the company.
According to him, six passengers have suffered slight injuries and since then they have been treated, although the exact number of passengers on board has not yet been determined.
Meanwhile, NSIB has confirmed that it has opened a probe in derailment.
Its director of public affairs and family assistance, Bimbo Oladeji, said that a preliminary relationship indicated that no life was lost.
The general manager of NSIB, Alex Badeh Jr., expressed sympathy for the affected people, observing that a team of investigators had been sent to the site to collect evidence and collaborate with the interested parties.
“We are deeply sympathized with all those who have reported injuries.
“Our investigators are on the ground to discover the main cause of this derailment.
“Our commitment is to guarantee a safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” said Badeh.
The Bureau added that its probe would examine both immediate and underlying factors, with recommendations to prevent future events.
He also promised continuous support for interested passengers.
The derailment took place around 11 on Tuesday, shortly after the train started Abuja for Kaduna.
Passengers described the scene as chaotic as many climbed safe.
