NYG: NWF begins the implementation of new categories of body weights

Abuja (Core reporter) Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) will begin implementation of new body weight categories at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in ASABA, in the Delta State.

Youth games that will start from 29 August to 6 September will present over 30 sporting events including weight lifting.

The NWF of Monday 21 July 2025 informed all the coaches, the interested parties and the officials who would have implemented the new bodyweights approved by the International Weights Federation (IWF).

The Federation in a press release signed by the media officer, Amaechi Agbo, directed all coaches and state associations to ensure that their athletes enlisted for the NYG respect the new categories of body weight.

A total of six categories of body weights that include three each for men and women will be present in the lifting event at NYG ASABA 2025.

The new body weight categories for men are: 56 kg, 60 kg and 65 kg.

The new body weight categories for women are: 44 kg, 48 kg and 53 kg.

It could be remembered that the International weight lifting federation (IWF) began to implement the new categories of body weight for senior, junior and youthful athletes from 1 June 2025, as ratified by the Board of Directors

These changes include eight classifications for men and women in senior and junior divisions and for young people there are eight categories for both boys and girls.

A break of the new categories includes

Senior and Junior:

Men: 60 kg, 65 kg, 71 kg, 79 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, 110 kg, +110 kg

Women: 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 86 kg, +86 kg

Youth:

Men: 56 kg, 60 kg, 65 kg, 71 kg, 79 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, +98 kg

Women: 44 kg, 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, +77 kg

36 States of the Federation and the territory of the Federal Capital should participate in the weight lifting event at the National Youth Games in Asaba, in the Delta State.
