Obasanjo blames Nigerian government for removal of fuel subsidy

Former Nigerian president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that the fuel subsidy which was withdrawn in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu’s administration has been reinstated due to inflation.

Obasanjo stated this in a short news documentary recently published by the Financial Times.

He even blamed President Tinubu for removing fuel subsidies without taking preventive measures before the removal.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. It’s not just about waking up one morning and saying subsidies have been withdrawn.

“Because of inflation, the subsidies we remove do not disappear. They reappear,” the former President stressed.

He said there must be investor confidence in Nigeria.

“We have to shift from a transactional economy to a transformational economy,” he added.

He made the statement amidst the increasing number of hunger protests in Nigeria.

The protests that started on Thursday entered their sixth day on Tuesday with the main demand being the restoration of the fuel subsidy regime.
