Obasanjo: Nigeria’s wealth should eliminate poverty

Former President OlusEgun Obasanjo said that poverty should not exist in Nigeria, underlining that the abundant resources of the country should be exploited for the improvement of its citizens.

Obasanjo made these observations during a dinner organized in his honor by the government of the State of Abia to the Chamber of the Government of Umuaia on Friday.

According to him, Nigeria is richly endowed with God and there is no reason why the Nigerians should suffer poverty.

“The Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has given us everything we need,” said Obasanjo.

“If we are rudding badly what God has given us, we do not have God to blame, we have ourselves to blame.”
The former president praised the governor of the state of Abia, Alex Otti, for his transformative leadership, noting the positive impact he had on the people of Abia.

He reiterated his commitment to support good government throughout the country, underlining that the well -being of the Nigerians should be the priority of any leader.

“For me, whether you don’t greet me or I greet you and you don’t answer, what is important for me is that the people of this country are getting what they deserve and what they deserve is a good government,” added Obasanjo.

The governor Otti, reflecting on his political journey, shared the challenges he had to face, including the contested elections, and expressed hope for the future. “Once you have the vision, you have to keep it. It took ten years to get here.

The two elections that we contested from 2015 to 2019, we have clearly won, but were all stolen. Many people had given up hope, but I was sure I had clearly heard from God, “he said.

Even the former transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, spoke to the event, exhorting the Abien to prepare for the 2027 elections, underlining the need for early mobilization to guarantee victory.

“APC and other parts are already mobilizing and if we do not prepare now, we could lose completely,” Amaechi warned.
