On Tuesday, the Ogun State House of Assembly recommended the immediate suspension of the Olu of Obafemi Owode local government area of the state, Oba Taofeek Owolabi, over alleged land grabbing.
Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions, Mr. Babatunde Tella, read out the committee’s recommendations during a plenary session in Abeokuta.
The report was based on a petition received from the Agboro Olatunde Community Development Association opposing the king.
Tella said the DPR received a petition from the public on January 29.
The MP said the traditional ruler did not attend despite being invited several times.
He said: “The Committee conducted an on-site assessment of the disputed land and observed that the action of the traditional ruler was contrary to the Anti-Land Grabbing Law 2016 of Ogun State.
“Oba Owolabi, who is accused of land grabbing, brought a developer to Agboro-Olatunde village where over 30 hectares of land belonging to residents were cleared.

“After a thorough investigation, the committee recommended that the State Attorney General and the Commissioner of Justice prosecute the traditional ruler.
“This will be in accordance with the provisions of the Anti-Land Grabbing Law 2016 in Ogun State and other applicable laws.
“The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the Oba of Ogun State House of Assembly should immediately suspend the traditional ruler for engaging in acts that are likely to disturb the peace of the residents of Agboro-Olatunde village.”
The lawmaker urged residents to obey the law and refrain from acts that disturb the peace while awaiting the implementation of the House’s recommendations.
Tella then moved a motion to adopt the report, which was supported by the member of parliament representing Ijebu North ll, Segun Kaka.
