Okonjo-Iweala to politicians: Don’t use my name to fight wars

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned politicians not to use his name in political battles.

Okonjo-Iweala, who reacted to a Facebook post purportedly written by her, denied putting up the post.

He alleged that there was a plan to use his name to carry out political fights with rival politicians.

Therefore, he warned those behind the act not to misuse his name for their political purposes.

The controversial Facebook post quoted Okonjo-Iweala as saying:

β€œNigeria’s debt for the first time in history has increased to 24 trillion in just 2 months even after the removal of subsidies is something extraordinary.

β€œI called several times for help and advice, but the current administration and the cabal refused to let me in. How can you eliminate fuel subsidies with a debt of 24 trillion in 2 months.”

In another post on his X account on Monday, the former Minister of Finance described the post as fake because it did not come from him.

He wrote: β€œTHIS IS IMPORTANT- It seems there are people in Nigeria trying to use my name and image on social media to fight on various sides of the political divide, putting words in my mouth that I never said.

β€œTherefore, I would like to remind everyone that the message below is FAKE.

β€œThis is a stern warning to all those who try to misuse my name for their political purposes, that I will continue to refute any attempts to falsely use my name and image!”
