Okowa: Because we joined APC – Thage

By Ayo Kehinde

The former governor of the Delta state, Ifeanyi Okowo, had said that his decision, together with the sheriff of the governor Oborevwori and the entire structure of the people’s Democratic Party in the State to join the Congress All Progressi, was taken in the best interest of the people.

Vice -president Kashim Shettimo and dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the national president of the APC, on Monday in Asaba, the capital of the state of the delta, formally received Gov Oborevwori, the former governor Okowa and other leaders of the PDP who deserted the party.

Speaking to a ceremony in which a gigantic crowd at the Cenotafio of Asaba was attended, Okowo said he left their former party to connect with Abuja, the headquarters of the power of Nigeria, to draw on his resources.

“It is a big day for us in the state of the delta. When the news arrived on Wednesday 23 April 2025, that we had decided to change our path, people wondered why. But one thing is very important. In the history of a people, there is always time to change our path for the common good of the people.

“As I told people that day, it was not about me, it was not the governor, but the fact that there is a need for us to connect to Abuja, that good will that is located in Abuja, that resource that is in Abuja of which Delta State is a great collaborator, a need to connect with it was necessary.

“And any decision that we took is based on that common good and on the need to change our path in the best interest of our state,” he said.

Okowa described the defection of the political leaders of the APC as patriotic and strategic, saying that Delta lost a lot during his mandate because the state was in opposition.

“I was governor for eight years. I was in opposition. I did my best, but we lost much. And I didn’t think the governor needed to work very hard and we know that we are very favorable to the governor’s sheriff because he is doing a lot.

He invited Delans who are already in the APC to embrace and work with them to make the party in the state in the state.
