Edo State Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, on Thursday formally received the certificates of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This milestone, which was confirmed by INEC National Commissioner Rhoda Gumus, strengthens their positions as the next governor and deputy governor.
Okpebholo’s victory in the tight Edo governorship election was announced on Sunday by Prof. Faruq Kuta, Electoral Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. With 291,667 votes, Okpebholo secured 11 out of the 18 Local Government Areas, beating his nearest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 247,274 votes in the seven constituencies.

Election Details:
– Winner: Monday Okpebholo (APC) – 291,667 votes, 11 LGAs
– Runner-up: Asue Ighodalo (PDP) – 247,274 votes, 7 LGAs
– Third Place: Olumide Akpata (Labour Party) – 22,761 votes
The election marks a significant transition for Edo State, as Okpebholo prepares to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is set to leave Osadebe House on November 11 after completing two terms. Okpebholo’s victory has drawn attention from prominent figures, including congratulations from President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, while the PDP has raised concerns over alleged irregularities.
When Okpebholo assumed office, he was tasked with addressing pressing issues in the state and meeting the expectations of Edo citizens. With his certificate of return in hand, the stage was set for a new chapter in the governance of Edo State.
