The 22nd National Sports Festival, ‘Gateway Games 2024’, has been and disappeared, leaving an indelible brand in Nigerian sports. A name that deserves a special mention for its instrumental role in the success of the Games is the general director of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade. As a sports administrator, Olopade has made giant advances in Nigerian sports, and its impact cannot be exaggerated.
During his term as a sports commissioner in the state of Ogun under the administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel (2003-2011), Olopade played a fundamental role in the elevation of the state sports profile. His unique leadership style and his vision for sports development earned him recognition as one of the oldest sports commissioners in the state.
Olopade’s most notable achievements include preparing and winning the offer to organize the National Sports Festival in the state of Ogun. He successfully organized the 2006 edition, labeled ‘Gateway Games’, at the Mko Abiola stadium in Abeokuta and other notable places throughout the state. His efforts was worth it when Ogun State was the host of the 22nd National Sports Festival, ‘Gateway Games 2024’, which was a resounding success.
Since he was appointed General Director of the National Sports Commission on November 14, 2024, by the President Simoju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ozo, as Olopade is called, has transformed the face of Nigerian sports with their strategic initiatives, such as;
Development of elite athletes and podium board: Olapade inaugurated this Board to focus on nourishing high performance athletes, with the aim of podiums consisting of international competitions.
Promotion of gender equality in sports: Olopade has been a great defender of women’s participation in sports, who support events such as Ogun women run to empower female athletes and promote gender equality.
Inclusive sports development: emphasizing the importance of all sports disciplines, Olopade has worked to create a conducive environment for several sports, ensuring that less known sports receive attention and resources. Few of minor sports or unknown sports in Nigeria, who made their debut in the demonstration at the National Sports Festival in the state of Ogun this year, are electronic sports, flag soccer and fight against the arms.
In addition, Olopade is the brain behind the access marathon Bank Lagos City, which has placed Nigeria on the world map and exhibited the country’s potential in the organization of international sporting events. The marathon has become a flagship event, promoting physical state, health and sports development in Nigeria. His participation in the organization of other mini marathons throughout the country has contributed even more to the growth of athletics in Nigeria.
