Olubadan Ladoja urges Tinubu to create the state of Ibadan before 2027

The 44th Olubadan recently crowned Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adventu Ladoja, invited President Bola Tinubu to guarantee the creation of the state of Ibadan before the end of his administration in 2027.

The monarch appealed during his coronation on Thursday after receiving his office staff during a large ceremony held in Mapo Hall, Ibadan. The event was attended by President Tinubu, the governor of the State of Oyo Seyi Makinde and other dignitaries.

Speaking to Yoruba, Oba Ladoja said that his ascension to the throne was a platform to defend the aspirations of his people, in particular their long demand for a separate state.

He said: “My people sent me a message to the president. Mr. President, they said that the creation of the state of Ibadan is their priority”.

Governor Makinde, in his observations, described Ladoja’s emergence as a source of pride for the ancient city.

He said: “It is a great honor to join to celebrate the coronation and presentation of the office of Office to its imperial majesty, Oba Adventu Ladoja, like the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The joy and excitement that IBADAN fill today we remember the importance of the importance of supporting our precious traditions.”

Before the official coronation, the monarch had observed traditional rites, including the symbolic reception of the Akoko leaf in the Labosinde compound in Oja’ba, marking his induction in the venerated stool.

Governor Makinde, who interrupted the permission to personally conduct the presentation, formally resumed the office at the beginning of the week, as confirmed by the Oyo state assembly house.

The requests for the creation of the state of Ibadan have obtained a renewed momentum last year when a bill on the modification of the constitution that tries to carve out both the state of Ibadan and a new state of Oyo have passed the second reading to the room of representatives.

The proposed law, sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, son of the deceased Alaafin of Oyo, together with six other legislators, recommended Ibadan City as the capital of the new state of Ibadan, while Oyo Town would have served as the capital of the proposed state of Oyo.

If made, the move would fulfill decades of agitation by Ibadan’s indigenous people, who argue that their population and historical meaning deserve a separate state.
