Openozie Desire: a career of grit and honored glory at the Wakawaka Sports Awards

This weekend in Owerri, the heart of the state of Imo will beat stronger for Nigerian sports while the icons of the whole nation gather in the prestigious City Cruz Hotel. Among those that is celebrated there is one of the most admired football figures in Nigeria: the opanotic desire, former captain of the Super Falcons, who will be honored with a Wakawaka Sports Award for its exceptional contribution to Nigerian football.

The oparancia journey is defined by resilience, leadership and consistency. From dusty shots of Owerri to global stadiums under the lights of international tournaments, his ascent in the world of football has inspired a generation.

Born in Owerri in December 1993, Oparanozie began his professional career with Bayelsa Queens before moving on to Delta Queens, where he quickly affirmed himself as one of the most lethal attackers of Nigeria, helping the club with two league titles.

His talent could not be contained in the Nigerian borders. A series of international moves followed: Turkey, Russia, Germany and in the end France, where he spent six years with En -vant Guingamp and became not only a top scorer, but the club’s captain, gaining respect for fans and teammates. He later played for Deso FCO and Wuhan Jianghan University in China before retiring in 2023.

The inheritance of oparancies extends well beyond his club career. For over a decade, it has been a constant presence in the Super Falcons, helping Nigeria win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) four times – in 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2018. His performance of 2014 was particularly memorable as he claimed the gold boot with five goals.

But perhaps his most decisive moment came off the pitch. As a captain, he guided a public request for the equality of remuneration and a better treatment for women’s players in Nigeria – a bold move that triggered a conversation at national level and has opened the way for structural change in Nigerian women’s football.

As he prepares to receive his award at the City Cruz Hotel, oparanetizes remains humble. “It’s an honor to be recognized at home,” he said. “This prize is not only for me – it is for every girl who dreams of wearing the green shirt. I am proud of what I have done and even more enthusiastic than what the future reserves for women’s football in Nigeria.”

The Wakawaka Sports Awards promise to be a night of celebration, reflection and inspiration – and the name of oparancies will be in the center, as it should be.
