The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis has entered a new phase after the party’s interim National Chairman, Umar Damagum, on Wednesday, advised Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) leader Edwin Clark, to avoid sentiments in handling issues.
Damagum’s call followed Clark’s demand that Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike leave the party.
In an open letter, Clark accused the minister of using his closeness to President Bola Tinubu to exert pressure on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his party.
However, Damagum in a statement urged the senior statesman to reflect on his age and refrain from public disputes.
He said: “I will borrow Olisah Metuh’s statement from 2015 when Edwin Clark left the party.

“There is no doubt that he is an elder statesman. However, I think when you reach that age, God has given you the opportunity and wisdom to be a father to everyone, not to engage in public debates.
“He has everything it takes to do what is necessary, not by taking a sentimental approach to the situation. I was not raised to disrespect my elders, so I do not intend to discuss this further.”
The exchange highlighted the deepening divisions within the PDP with Clark calling for Wike’s exit and Damagum warning against sentiment.
The party leadership faces a tough task in reconciling the warring factions and restoring unity.
