PDP demands reinstatement of Edo REC, CP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded the reinstatement of the Edo State Commissioner of Elections, Anugbum Onuoha, ahead of this month’s governorship election in the state.

Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, who made the call at a press conference in Abuja, also demanded the reinstatement of the state Commissioner of Police, Nemo Edwin-Iwo.

He said party members would defend their votes with blood in the September 21 state elections.

The party was conspicuously absent when all parties fielding candidates in the general election signed a peace agreement brokered by the National Peace Committee (NPC) on Thursday in Benin City.

The PDP chieftain urged the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure a free and fair election in the state.

He said: “The PDP demands that the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, immediately transfer the Edo State Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, from the state, especially now that the people are agitated over this inappropriate appointment.

“The IGP should also immediately transfer the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Nemo Edwin-Iwo, to ensure confidence, peace and security during the Edo State governorship election.

“The IGP must immediately release all PDP members detained by the police. The IGP must stop interfering in the activities of the Edo State Security Corps, a legally established body.

“On the peace agreement, no one is shirking responsibility. On the contrary, we are showing Nigerians that there is something fishy going on under this All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, where the police are paid with taxpayers’ money.

“We will participate. We will take to the streets and defend our voices with our blood.

“Let them be very, very clear. We cannot sign or be part of it because we have given conditions, and they are responsible for ensuring that those conditions are met. If they arrest only members of one party, then there is something you don’t know about. So, what peace are we signing?”
