Acting Chairperson of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has rejected a statement credited to the Secretary of the National Publicity of the Party, Debo Oologunagba, in front of the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.
Oologunagba had said at a press conference held in Abuja last week that PDP was not obliged to write the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) for its routine meeting, including NEC meetings scheduled on June 30.
But Damagum in a statement that he personally signed and provided for journalists in Abuja, described Oologunagba’s comments about Inec’s position at the party meeting as invalid.
He said: “Allow me clearly and firmly stated that comments by Oologunagba were made without the approval of the Party National Work Committee (NWC).”

He said the party leaders would meet with the Chair of Inec, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to overcome the concerns submitted in a letter sent to the party.
The chairman said he was shocked that such sensitive problems were handled publicly without assistance for established internal processes or party leadership.
“In my capacity as an acting chairman of the National, I want to clarify that the view expressed by Oologunagba in the press interaction is entirely his personal opinion and does not represent the official position of PDP,” Damagum added.
He said that while the PDP remained committed to maintaining its internal autonomy and rejecting the non -external disturbance of external forces, he had to do it in a responsible way.
“Our strength lies in our unity, discipline, and compliance with the process that should be.
“PDP remains committed to holding the 1100 NEC meeting in accordance with constitutional provisions and democratic norms.
“However, we will do it with the right collective consensus and coordination, not through a private posture lens,” he said.
