PDP is now back in loyal hands – Wike

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike on Sunday said loyal members had taken back the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blasting defectors and attacking opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the remarks at the 10th National Elective Convention of the PDP held in Abuja, describing the meeting as a turning point for the party after months of internal crisis.

According to him, the convention marked a rebirth of the party and a restoration of its leadership structure.

“Today marks the rebirth of our party in a new form. Today is the birth of a united party, ready to move forward,” Wike said.

The former Rivers State governor said the successful conduct of the convention, monitored by the election umpire, showed that the party had regained stability after prolonged leadership disputes.

He criticized party members who defected during the crisis, saying their actions showed a lack of leadership.

“Leadership is not easy. It requires courage, steadfastness and commitment. What we have seen, that is, the abandonment of some governors, only demonstrates a lack of leadership. When crises arise, real leaders stand up and solve them; they don’t run away,” he said.

Wike commended the grassroots members for remaining loyal to the party despite the pressure and uncertainty.

“When push came to shove, you refused to be discouraged. When some who claimed to be leaders threatened and intimidated you, you stood your ground. Through your perseverance and faith, you brought us to this moment, and here we are, victorious,” he added.

He further stated that the PDP has been returned to its core supporters.

“More importantly, we have recovered and returned the party to its rightful owners, the people,” Wike said.

Despite his criticism, Wike urged defectors to return to the party, assuring them of inclusion if they embraced unity and discipline.

“Our brothers and sisters who may have left should return and join us in rebuilding this party for the collective good. No one will be left out; everyone will have the opportunity to serve in unity and law,” he said.

The FCT minister also criticized some opposition figures, including former Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing them of failing to provide leadership during the party’s crises.

He compared defecting governors to opposition figures who he said failed to hold on in difficult times.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Wike expressed confidence that the PDP will remain politically relevant.

“By the grace of God, the PDP will be there by March 2027,” he said.

He called on members to recommit to strengthening the party’s internal structures and ensuring that the voice of the people is adequately represented as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
