A queen in the palace of the Oba of Benin faces possible removal following an unauthorized visit by social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, known as Peller, in what the Benin Traditional Council described as a “serious breach of protocol and desecration.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its secretary, Frank Irabor, the council said Peller and his entourage gained access to the palace on March 6, 2026, without necessary approvals during his national tour, triggering disciplinary action within the palace hierarchy.
“The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the spiritual and ancient center of the Oba of Benin,” read the statement, underscoring the sanctity of the institution.
Following an initial investigation, the board confirmed that sanctions had been imposed on individuals associated with the incident. A chief linked to the offenses has been suspended indefinitely, while a member of palace staff, identified as Mr. Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigerian Police and charged in court for allegedly facilitating the entry of unauthorized persons.
The council further revealed that a queen who appeared in the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which, in line with Benin customs and traditions, could result in her being expelled from the palace.
Peller has also been summoned to appear before the chairman’s committee to explain his actions but has not complied. The board insisted that he must issue an “unconditional written apology” for the incident, and warned that failure to do so could result in legal action. Law enforcement agencies have been notified.
Reaffirming its authority, the Benin Traditional Council said it remains committed to protecting the cultural and spiritual integrity of the kingdom under the reign of Oba Ewuare II.
