Former Governor of the State Anambra, Peter Obi, has greatly criticized the imposition of 700,000 reopening fees reported to traders in Onitsha Head Bridge Market.
Describe the request as “insensitive,” Obi urged the authorities to reverse the decision for the benefit of economic recovery and justice.
Obi voiced his concern in a statement posted on X on Tuesday. He remembered visiting the market during the initial closure and showed his support for regulatory efforts to fight fake drugs and fake products.
“I remember visiting the head bridge market during the initial phase of closing, supporting the authorities to ensure our community is free from fake medicines and fake goods,” Obi said.
He explained that his previous support for the authorities was based on the hope that the investigation would be carried out quickly, allowing the market to reopen quickly and reduce economic tension on small business owners.
“Therefore, it is unfortunate to know that the shop owner is now asked to pay ₦ 700,000 to reopen their shop,” he said.

Obi emphasized the strong impact of such costs on small and medium businesses, especially when they had faced big challenges in the Nigerian economic climate.
“Our MSME business is in the ‘We Cannot Breath’ Stage, and the system that must offer them oxygen to support their breathing instead strangle it,” he said.
He condemned the accusation of reopening as a form of “economic sabotage” and asked the authorities to reconsider the policy, noting that traders had experienced a long closure and significant financial burden.
“The owner of this shop has experienced a prolonged closure, raising unpaid bills, and economic tensions. Adding further burdens to them and their families are currently unfair,” Obi added.
Reaffirming his position, the former presidential candidate emphasized the need for empathy and practical economic solutions.
“Let’s prioritize compassion, economic recovery, and survival of our small business at a critical time in our country,” he said.
Obi concluded his statement by submitting an appeal directly to the authorities: “Please review and drop this fee. Let this business be reopened. Compament must be in the roots of government actions.”
