Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, on Friday strongly condemned recent “hate speech” attributed to Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman living in Canada.
Sunnberger allegedly made threatening remarks in a viral TikTok video that appeared to be aimed at Nigerians of a particular ethnic group. The video, which reportedly included advice to poison members of a particular tribe, sparked widespread outrage and calls for action.
In response to the controversy, the Nigerian House of Representatives diaspora issues committee has urged the Canadian government to prosecute Sunnberger on hate speech charges.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, took to social media platform X to address the issue. He stressed the need for national unity, saying, βWe must come together and focus on overcoming common challenges, rather than allowing tribalism and hatred to divide us.β
The opposition leader further stressed that tribal or religious bigotry is detrimental to Nigeria’s development. “Such divisive comments or behavior have no place in our society,” Obi said, calling on Nigerians to “live together in peace and love.”

“I strongly condemn the hateful remarks and actions alleged by a Nigerian woman living in Canada against other Nigerians of various origins. Such divisive comments or behaviour have no place in our society,” he said.
“As Nigerians, we must unite and focus on addressing common challenges, rather than allowing tribalism and hatred to divide us. I have consistently opposed the polarization of our country along tribal, religious or political lines.
βWe as Indonesian citizens must live side by side in peace and compassion, and choose leaders who have integrity, competence, consistency, capacity, character, and compassion, so that we can overcome existing challenges and advance this country in the right direction.
“Let us focus on what really matters: building a prosperous, united and just Nigeria for all. We must reject tribalism and religious divisions, and embrace our common humanity, working together towards a new Nigeria that is POSSIBLE!”
