Peter Obi demands release of Kanu and #ENDSARS protesters

The Labor Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, on Saturday demanded the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, #ENDSARS protesters and others still detained.

In a chat with journalists in Onitsha, Anambra State, the LP candidate also decried the worsening insecurity in the state.

The former governor of Anambra state challenged government at all levels to redouble their efforts to tackle insecurity and save the state from descending into a failed state.

The federal government has recently come under pressure to release Kanu who is currently on trial on charges of treason and terrorism at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, last week lamented the continued detention of some #ENDSARS protesters by the police four years after a nationwide campaign against atrocities by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) squad.

He said: “The main job of government is the security of lives and property. It is the basis on which people can live in any country because no one can live in an unsafe place.

“What is happening in Nigeria is truly alarming with news of killings, kidnappings and more making Nigeria one of the most unsafe places on earth. In fact, it is causing a failed state.

“I thank the government for their efforts so far, but much still needs to be done, and all leaders must unite to join hands and fight this. In the Southeast region, governors need to unite to be able to overcome it.

“Even on the economic agenda, I would like to see the Southeast governors working more closely. We want to see them come together and also bring together other groups in the zone.

“For Kanu, I see no reason whatsoever for his continued detention, especially since the court has granted him bail. The government must obey the court.

“The rule of law is a complex asset that we must cherish and live by. I take this opportunity to appeal to the government to ensure that all those in similar circumstances are released and discussed. We are in a democracy and we should not do things that are arbitrary and unlawful.”
