The Nigerian journalist, Philip Obaji, was appointed one of the two winners of the Knight international journalism prize this year.
Obaji, corresponding to the Daily Beast, is well known for the documentation of Russian atrocities in central and western Africa.
César Batiz, an investigative journalist in exile who is the co-founder and director of the pioneering El Pitzo in Venezuela, is the other winner.
“The winners of this year showed a considerable ability to emerge the truth despite the powerful entities that work to suppress it,” said the president of ICFJ Sharon Moshavi. “César and his team from El Pitazo reach the Venezuelans with independent news, to evade the censorship with innovative means. Half world distance, Philip is documenting the often brutal activities of Russia in Africa while touching the natural resources of the continent to help finance his war against Ukraine.”
The ICFJ Knight Awards are supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The winners were selected by a jury made up of important news managers, past winners of the ICFJ prize and other illustrious members.
Obaji, who received Homo Homini Award in March, is the main journalist who reports on massacres, rape, torture and other abuses at the hands of the Russian paramilitary, mainly in the Republic of Central Africa (Car) and Mali. During his relationships, Obaji has been kidnapped and beaten and regularly faces threats.
“Philip Obaji is a journalist of global meaning, led by his commitment to the local world,” said Carlos Eduardo Huertas, judge of the ICFJ Knight prize and director of the Connectas investigative reporting hub. “His talent, courage and commitment to truth led him to deepen the extremely dangerous areas, following the traces of the authors of the most atrocious attacks, in particular against the women of his region.
The two winners will be honored on November 13 at the ICFJ prize dinner, together with Lester Holt of NBC News, which will receive the ICFJ Founders Prize for excellence in journalism, as announced in April. Abby Phillip, which anchors “NewsNight with Abby Phillip” of the CNN, will serve by EMcee.
