Poland has denied claims that its citizens, arrested by security forces in Kano, Nigeria, were waving Russian flags during #EndBadGovernance protests.
The Polish Foreign Ministry stated that the six students and their teacher, who were arrested on August 6, did not participate in the protest but “only took photos.”
Department of State Services spokesman Peter Afunanya alleged that the Polish nationals were arrested “because they were found during the protest and because they were raising a foreign flag.” However, the Polish Foreign Ministry denied this, saying the students were on an exchange program at Bayero University, Kano, and were not involved in the protest.

University of Warsaw Press Officer Anna Modzelewska stressed that the release of the students is the top priority for the institution. She stated, “Freeing the UW students is our priority. We must do everything we can to make it happen as soon as possible.”
The Polish government has also appealed to Nigeria to release the detainees, with Deputy Foreign Minister Jakub Wisniewski expressing skepticism about claims that they were flying the Russian flag. He said: “I personally find these claims unbelievable. We urge them to return home safely, where their loved ones are anxiously waiting for them.”
Former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Professor Bola Akinterinwa, advised Polish authorities to be patient and allow the investigation to complete.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Poland, Omooba Ayoola, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release the students and their lecturers, citing the need to deepen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
