Police arrested two for allegedly trading girls to Mauritania

The operation at the Zone 2 Police Command was on Onikan, Lagos, had arrested two syndicate members for allegedly trading girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for prostitution.

Zonal public relations officer (ZPRO), Umma Ayuba, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

He said the suspects were arrested on March 22 over the command in the Meiran area in the state.

Ayuba said: “Operations from the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad (ZIRS), led by SP Francis KPoughul, invaded their base where two suspects were arrested.

“The suspects acknowledge the crime.

“The first suspect said he was introduced to a woman based in Mauritania by another woman, who had been prosecuted for the same violation and is currently serving a prison sentence.

“He said women in Mauritania contracted her to recruit young girls under the age of 22 to be used as sex workers there.

“He added that he received ₦ 50,000 as a commission for every girl sent to Mauritania.

“He admitted that, among the girls he recruited, was his 19-year-old daughter. He also claimed to receive more than ₦ 500,000 from women in Mauritania,” the spokesman added.

Ayuba said the second suspect admitted that he was contracted by the first suspect to recruit girls as domestic staff in Mauritania.

“He said that, after being asked further, he found that the girls would be used as sex workers and decided to withdraw from business.

“He added that the only girl he sent to the first suspect was rejected because of his age and body size. That’s when he realized something was wrong.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged in court after being completed,” he said.
